The city is bordered to the south and west by Mesquite, east of Dallas, and Little Bear Creek Linear Park, which is the largest linear park in the United States and one of the oldest linear parks in Texas.

The Dallas Independent School District serves the southwestern part of Balch Springs, while the Mesquite Independent School District serves the northeastern part. Most students are scheduled for grades 6 to 8, but in the fall of 2016 it was converted into a girls-only middle school.
